What: Rent
When:Jan 29, 2010 12:32 AM
Where:Las Vegas, Nevada
Why: I believe this is controversial because parents i would believe would not want their children exposed to that type of theatre experience at their age. Rent has quite a few derogatory word choices. The show also has homosexual and drug references that parents might find unsuitable for their children.

What: Stop Kiss
When:4/14/08
Where:Norte Dame, IN
Why: The reason why this show was labeled as controversial is because of the venue it was presented. The school is a redeemed for its high catholic values and moral beliefs. "Stop Kiss" includes many aspects of violence and homosexuality and foul language. This is why I believe this show is controversial for Saint Mary's College.

Why: Hair was a big controversial topic in to 1960's because that was still a big era for moral belief and Hair was a huge deal because of the Naked scene at the end of Act 1 that was really done to my knowledge back in the 60's to expose ones self on stage.

Why:Avenue Q made many comments about racism. The reason why some people thought it was controversial is because most of audience member's where not ready themselves to tackle the issue. A big example in this show would be the song everyone is a little bit racist. The show has lyrics like "Mexican busboys should learn to speak goddamn English!". This may have left some audience members feeling uncomfortable.

Why: This was seen as controversial because an all black cast was doing Shakespeare. In the 1821 blacks were not allowed to preform in Broadway shows and when William Brown decide to rent out a space on Broadway he angered some officials who hired thugs to harass the black actors. When local police were called they were told to arrest the actors and not the thugs harassing the actors.

Who: Holly HughesWhat:Clit Notes
When: 1990
Where:Off Broadway
Why: This was highly controversial because this show was seen as more pornographic than eroticism. Hughes explores her own developing sexuality by revealing her attractions to her father, to her mother, and to butch lesbians who remind her of her father. These topics in the 90's as revolutionary as it was, was still pushing the limit to how far one could go.
